Descriptive literature review of the added value of virtual realities in vocational education and training
2020
Tarkastelemme tässä katsaus artikkelissa virtuaalitodellisuusteknologian (VR) hyödyntämistä ammattikasvatuksen kentällä viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana. Tavoitteenamme on selvittää, minkälaista empiiristä tutkimusta aiheesta on tehty ja minkälaista lisäarvoa VR tuottaa ammattikasvatukselle 13 tutkimusartikkelin perusteella. Tulosten perusteella tutkimus VR:n hyödyntämisestä ammattikasvatuksessa on yhtäältä lisääntynyt, mutta toisaalta empiirisiä tuloksia on vielä suhteellisen vähän. Tutkimus on toistaiseksi keskittynyt käyttökokemuksiin erilaisia VR-sovelluksia hyödynnettäessä. Havaitsemamme lisäarvo liittyy erityisesti reaalimaailman rajoitusten ylittämiseen ja erilaisten oppimisprosessie…
Managing Knowledge in Academic Libraries Are we? Should we?
2016
This article gives an overview of the field of knowledge management and suggests how this can be applied to academic libraries. A literature review has been conducted and has been subject to a critical analysis of comparison to IFLAs standard for “Continuing Professional Development: Principles and Best Practices” (IFLA, 2015). Here IFLA has identified 10 points of best practice. These 10 points will be measured against the literature in the field of knowledge management to ascertain if academic libraries would benefit from a stronger relation to knowledge management.
TEL@work: Toward integration of theory and practice
2014
This paper examines technology-enhanced learning at work in the context of the integrative pedagogy model. The basic idea behind this model is to create learning environments whereby the four basic elements of professional expertise (ie, theoretical, practical, self-regulative and sociocultural knowledge) can be integrated. The paper illustrates two basic ways of applying the model in technology-enhanced learning at work. First, examples of how to make use of existing technologies, especially social media, to empower learning at work is presented, and second, an instance of the way the model is used in the design of specific technologies for enhancing collaborative learning in the work cont…
How can a learning network support organisational development?
2010
The purpose of this study is to examine the development processes within a network project, The Learning Network of Knowledge Management. The study focuses on the impact of the network on two participating companies. The following research questions were addressed: (a) how did participation in a learning network support professional development of individuals; (b) how did it advance clarifying the mission, collaboration and work roles of teams; (c) how did organisational practices and processes develop as a result of the network project? The data were collected with interviews. The findings showed that the starting points, processes and results differed in two organisations. Both companies …
An agency-promoting learning arena for developing shared work practices
2017
Despite the emerging recognition of the pivotal role played by professional agency within work contexts, little is known about how agency is promoted and enacted in organised work-related learning settings. This chapter focuses on the work conference as an orchestrated agency-promoting learning arena. We understand professional agency as a necessary precondition of work-related learning, and we emphasise the potential of work conferences to activate and promote such agency. Our empirical study investigated three work conferences in education and healthcare organisations in Finland. Utilising assessments, the investigation addressed how the participants perceived the conditions for learning …
Analysing the Impact of the Glass Ceiling in a Managerial Career: The Case of Spain
2021
The need to break down the barriers facing women in the labour market arouses great interest for reasons of social and sustainability justice. This study breaks new ground on the topic of the “glass ceiling” by assessing the evolution of gender inequality in the proportion of individuals reaching high managerial positions. The application of the csQCA method to a survey of two cohorts of Spanish graduates in management sharing the same starting conditions reveals two factors: job variety and additional education, as conditions that are usually present in a successful managerial career. Our findings confirm the prevalence of the gender gap with little progress in recent years. Women find it …
A linguistic Insight into Legislative Drafting. Tradition and Change in the UK Legislation
2023
The main assumption proposed in this book is that legislative drafting represents an example of professional discourse, where the propositions of specialized information is translated into meanings, and such meanings are given as input to the rules and strategies of grammatical formulation. A relevant question for our understanding of modern legislative process is related to the effects of ‘context’ at different levels, within which legislative process takes place. By looking at those levels, the analysis conducted in the book demonstrates that it becomes possible to reach a deeper understanding of the professional groups taking part in the process, better assess the lexico-grammatical and …
Promoting mentalizing in organisations through learning operative groups
2021
Current and pressing scientific and technological changes are producing drastic transformations within organisations, creating anxiety and uncertainty and inhibiting the reflective function of the workers who experience conditions of senselessness and estrangement from their work. This article presents a case study from learning operative group training sessions aimed to promote the identity work through the (re)activation of the reflective function towards the definition of new shared meanings. As part of a broader organisational development process, group training sessions based on learning operative groups were arranged in order to offer participants a group reflective space in which eac…

2019
The interdependence of repetition and relevance in university lectures
2012
Abstract The world of professional communication includes so many innovative practices that a 25-century-old typology on repetition like Aristotle's or even a 40-year-old theory on relevance like Grice's might seem obsolete or hardly appealing for today's lecturers. This research aims to examine and illustrate the interdependence between relevance and repetition in current lecturing by firstly reviewing the main communicative strategies used to indicate relevance in this genre, highlighting the essential role of repetition when understanding and processing relevant information. After providing an account of the most frequent repetition mechanisms lecturers currently employ, a corpus of busi…
